Busy Memorial Day Weekend for Post 177

The Fairfax Rifles fire a volley during graveside ceremony in Fairfax Cemetery.

Legionnaires, Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion pitched in to make for another successful Memorial Day weekend around our community. There were many events that needed to be attended to during the weekend including the Auxiliary’s annual poppy charity drive, Rolling Thunder, and Memorial Day ceremonies.

Members of the Auxiliary got up early to serve coffee at Rolling Thunder.

Volunteers devoted numerous hours to activities such as serving coffee, cooking burgers, and collecting donations at area shopping centers for the good of Veterans.

Grady Wilson, 1st Vice Commander, lead the Pledge of Allegiance at Rolling Thunder in Fairfax.

President Bush Visits Post 177

President Bush during his speech at American Legion Post 177 this past Tuesday, April 10th, 2007.

President George W. Bush paid a visit to Post 177 this past Tuesday, April 10th, 2007, to deliver a speech to a national audience.

Commander Bob Sussan received word from the White House and the Secret Service just one week in advance of the visit. With such short notice, it took an Herculean effort by numerous people throughout the Post to pull off the visit.

The President arrived at the Post Home and briefly met with several of Post 177’s officers as well as American Legion officers from National and Department in the Small Ballroom. An American Legion Post 177 jacket and hat were presented to the President inscribed with his name. Then President Bush moved into the Large Ballroom where members of Post 177, other American Legion guests, and members of the press from all the major networks and newspapers waited for the President’s Speech. The President’s visit was a great honor for our Post as this was the first time a standing President has ever visited an American Legion Post Home.

A special thanks to all those who gave so much of their time to make this Presidential visit such a great success.

Post 177 Hosts Chamber of Commerce Mixer

American Legion Post 177 hosted a mixer for the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce in the Small Ball Room upstairs. Tables were set up displaying settings for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to demonstrate the possibilities available to businesses to hold their events at the Post Home. The evening was very successful and we are already seeing additional business coming in from the mixer. The Post intends to sponsor more mixers in the future.
