Get Ready for the January
3rd Thursday! |
|
The Bad News - The decision
was made to cancel the 3rd Thursday in December since it was the
Thursday just before Christmas. That was the day everybody was
either traveling to see family or preparing to travel; going to
parties or thinking of family. We hope you had a safe and happy holidays.
The Good News - American
Legion Post 177 in Fairfax has booked Mike Surratt and the
Eclectic Coalition Band for every 3rd Thursday beginning in
January. So get ready because Mike and his band will be back on
January 15th for a Winter Snowbird Dance. As always, it will be
Dinner and a Dance for $15.00 per person. See you there! |

Legionnaire Paul
Christian Preparing to Begin a New Adventure |
|
From his Web Log:
I’m a
100% Service Connected Disabled Veteran. I’m sort of between a
paraplegic and a quadriplegic. Due to a spinal cord injury at
C5-C6 I am permanently confined to a power
wheel-chair. Depending on which doctor you talk to I’m a “higher
functioning quadriplegic,” “a paraplegic with increased
deficits,” or “a tetraplegic.” All just fancy ways of saying
that I’m paralyzed.
Seize Adventure is an
idea that was started in the bar of the
Westin - Great Southern Hotel in Columbus, Ohio. My goal is
to travel North America alone and unsupported for a full year.
While I
have a several personal reasons for making this trip, the
biggest is about setting the bar for other disabled veterans.

Commander's
Message from the December 2008 / January 2009 Newsletter:
By the time you
will read this, Thanksgiving Dinner (although perhaps not the pounds
gained!) will have faded into fond memories and you will be gearing up
for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
Please keep in mind that your Post Home will be the epicenter of many
activities, for not only our active duty troops serving in harm’s way,
but also those many veterans in nursing homes and active duty troops at
our neighboring military installations. A group from our Post will be
assisting in the Wreath Laying project at Arlington National Cemetery
again this year. To make these events successful for our active duty
troops and our veterans, we need your volunteer time and talent. Please
contact one of the officers or email
volunteer@post177.org
to sign up to help with one or more of
our holiday events.
The White House Volunteers have once again prepared Service specific
ChristmasStockings and have entrusted our Post with the task of sending
them overseas to our deployed men and women. Should anyone have any
special contacts in the air freight forwarding business or know of a way
to get them to our troops, please email
stockings@post177.org
and lend us a hand.
During October, I celebrated my birthday. This year it meant a great
deal to me, as I had the opportunity to spend it with dear friends and
loved ones but that happiness soon gave way to some sincere and deep
reflection as I learned of the passing of one of our very special
members, John Dolan, who went home
on my birthday, October 25 th.
I am sure many of you remember John, who for the past few years was
confined to a wheelchair, although this did not stifle his pleasure at
being involved in many of our Post Activities. John was often brought to
our Post Home by his daughter Nancy and son-in-law Bob. I am sure many
of
you remember John as he proudly rode on our float in the 4 th
of July Parade and sipped his
draft beer at the Post Home. Some of his fondest memories were of those
visiting the WWII memorial and being proudly saluted by the motorcycle
riders during Rolling Thunder. John, I am sure you are happy rejoined
again with your wife Dora. We will keep you in our prayers. We miss you.
As we move into the New Year, 2009 will continue to bring challenges to
our Post on the financial front. Please keep tuned to the Newsletter and
the Post website for changes that we may need to make in operating our
Post Home in order to keep serving you while remaining financially
viable.
I
will close with my sincerest wish to you and your families for a very
Happy and Holy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Please keep our
Veterans, their families and all of our active duty troops who are
sacrificing this holiday season for our freedom in your thoughts and
prayers.
For God and
Country,
Bob Sussan
